Square Enix details major performance patch and roadmap for Foamstars as it chases a second life

Square Enix has outlined a substantial new update for Foamstars, its PlayStation-exclusive party shooter, as it works to stabilise performance and refine balance after a mixed launch. The patch, arriving later in June on PS5 and PS4, focuses on frame rate, matchmaking improvements and a rework of several overperforming abilities.
Alongside the technical changes, the publisher shared a short-term roadmap that hints at how it plans to keep interest alive with limited-time events, ranked tweaks and cosmetic rewards that can be earned instead of bought.
Performance boost on PS5 and network tweaks
The headline change is a new performance profile on PS5 that prioritises consistent frame rate during heavy foam effects. According to Square Enix, the patch updates rendering pipelines for foam particles and adjusts how destruction is calculated in busy scenes, particularly in 4v4 modes.
PS4 users are also set to see reduced hitches when multiple ultimates are triggered at once, plus shorter load times when returning to the lobby. The studio says matchmaking has been reworked to reduce situations where lobbies collapse after one person quits, a complaint that surfaced frequently in the first weeks after release.
Balance pass tones down dominant picks

On the design side, several of the most popular characters are receiving targeted balance changes. Damage falloff is being increased for high range foam launchers, and some mobility skills that allowed instant retreats to safety now have slightly longer cooldowns.
Square Enix is avoiding a complete overhaul, opting instead for incremental tuning over several patches. The new update also boosts underused defensive abilities, particularly shields that interact with vertical foam structures, to encourage more varied team compositions.
Ranked mode revisions and clearer progression
The ranked playlist is getting a clearer progression system, with visible thresholds that show how many matches are needed to reach the next tier. A new protection rule will prevent large point losses after a narrow defeat if the matchmaking algorithm predicts you were heavily unfavoured.
End-of-match screens now break down key stats like foam coverage, objective time and assists more transparently, which should help squads understand what is working without needing external trackers or spreadsheets.
Events, cosmetics and a cautious monetisation pivot

Foamstars will receive a series of short events tied to weekend playlists, each featuring slightly modified rules and themed rewards. Square Enix says cosmetic items from these events can be unlocked through play and will rotate into a free track later in the year for those who miss them.
The in-game store is also being adjusted. More bundles will include earnable currency, and the patch introduces an archive where past event items can be unlocked with tokens gained from challenges, instead of relying solely on premium currency.
Why this patch matters for Foamstars
For Foamstars, this update acts as an early test of whether Square Enix can turn an experimental shooter into a steady part of its online catalogue. The combination of performance work, measured balance changes and friendlier unlocks is aimed at making it easier to recommend to new and returning users.
If the patch hits its technical targets and the roadmap holds, Foamstars could shift from a curiosity to a more dependable pick for groups that want a colourful, low-pressure alternative to traditional shooters.
